Encounters with celebrity
Well, not really, although my coworker P. ran into Brad Pitt in the hotel lobby last time she was here. But his friend Angelina has made an impression...Sunday night is promenade night on Bole Rd., Las Ramblas of Addis, for all the chic Ethiopian youth. They get coffee, go to the stores, and walk in groups, men and women alike holding hands, up and down Bole’s broad sidewalk, sidestepping the sewage puddles and shrunken beggar children and randomly parked cars. One of the young men I passed in my purposeful, self-consciously alone march to the grocery store asked me, “Are you a relative of Angelina Jolie?!" She’s certainly made her mark in the developing world, both as an actress and an actively humanitarian-minded celebrity; she is UNHCR’s Goodwill Ambassador. I would much rather be associated with her than, say, Jenny Bush, so I'm going to take that as a compliment.
