It's contagious

The NYTimes writes about another flare-up of election day violence and intimidation, this time in Egypt. I was in Fayoum, a city north of Cairo, on election day two weeks ago, visiting a clinic. There was a dense crowd and the heavy presence of police, but there were no outbursts.

Apparently Mubarak and Zenawi are sharing notes on electoral oppression, while Liberia pulls peacefully (so far) away from 25 years of civil war with Africa's first elected female president, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, a Harvard grad to boot ~ and she won over George Weah, an international soccer star! The one truly inspiring bit of news I've read this past month.

Speaking of contagion, Meskel Square reported on the recent discovery of Artemisinin-resistant malaria. Artemisinin is currently the most effective treatment for malaria. Fantastic. Malaria kills more people in one year than AIDS has, total, and the majority of its fatalities are children and pregnant women.
