Renegade

So I’ve already managed to break the law here (some of you are probably surprised it took me this long.) But it was accidental, at least. I took a photo of this field near my hotel, and the backdrop happens to be the new elevated highway, followed by the airport, and a mountain range rising behind the airport. Yes, it's illegal to photograph the airports here, as well as embassies, government buildings, etc., and they are fairly strict about it and will confiscate film, leverage fines, and worse. I guess I won't have that one printed.

I have a few perfectly legal photos to share, but so far Blogger isn't letting me upload them for some reason. I will work on this.

I had my first taste of real Ethiopian food two nights ago, and it was well worth getting out of bed for (it was tough, let me tell you. I can’t decide which makes me feel worse—the fever or the head cold.) The injera (flat Ethiopian bread that you use to eat) was spongy and light and not as sour as I’ve had in the States—although that could be my compromised sense of taste, given my congestion—and I had the “fasting” sampler which included several vegetarian stews made of lentils, chickpeas, Ethiopian cheese (like ricotta), etc. piled on top of injera. Wednesday and Fridays are fasting days for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians—meaning they can’t eat meat—and right now is a special 16-day fasting period, complementing the two months of fasting they observe before Easter, so you can get fasting food any day of the week (which is my only source of vegetables at the moment.) Tonight I had the traditional spicy meat stew, generally made of lamb or beef, called kai wot. That cleared up the sinuses. I am currently watching the only channel other than CNN at the hotel, which is NBC 2 (satellite), and I’ve decided it’s where all the flopped movies go to die. Tonight, for example, the lineup is Don’t Say A Word (with Michael Douglas, whom I can’t look at without thinking of a bulldog), A Better Way To Die, and Carrie 2: The Revenge. Rockin’.
