Barriers

I've been prevented from posting due to a variety of factors: field travel, a subsequent debilitating GI illness, the untimely death of my laptop; and perhaps also a bit of a "chilling effect" due to the implicit threats that attend censorship...

But I will be back in blogging action soon, I hope! Also will be heading to Tanzania and Kenya shortly, countries which are actually hooked up to the fibreoptics network (as are Uganda, Somalia and pretty much everyone else in Africa other than Ethiopia, who apparently got into a spat with Djibouti over the labor required to connect to the network.)

But for now, the Amharic word of the week:

Tek'orach: n., slice. You order it at a cafe: "L'enne and tek'orach." (For me, one slice.) To most New Yorkers' surprise, this does not mean a slice of pizza. It's a slice of sweet yellow cake commonly eaten for breakfast and, thanks be to all the gods, is often offered as an alternative to the other available breakfast, injera with scrambled eggs and tripe.
