Monsoon
Last night the skies opened up with a fury that you just don't see in the States unless you're living through a hurricane. Hail, wind, and thrashing rain silenced the city for well over an hour, after which it calmed to a steady downpour. As the landscape and the life is harsher here, the weather must be too.My street is once again a river of mud and slippery rocks, and my hiking shoes are the only shoes I can wear to work as I stumble along the roads and try not to fall in cow dung or on my laptop. But the air smells clean and the dust is washed away, so I can wear my contacts all day again. The short rains have begun.
Next week I'm heading to East Gojjam, north of Addis, in the heart of Amhara Region, and won't be able to post. Have a great week, and I hope some warm weather comes your way to celebrate the commencement of Spring!
