oh the water
I am reading just now about the estimated thousands drowned in New Orleans and the Mississippi/Louisiana coasts...dear god, this is awful. I am hoping the emergency efforts make the best use possible of the remaining "golden 72 hours" for people still awaiting rescue, as well as securing safe water and food supplies as soon as possible for the refugees, to avoid post-emergency death and illness. Unfortunately, after such a disaster it's common to lose more people to the effects of the aftermath than were lost in the event. My heart goes out to all those who have lost and have been lost, and to the memory of New Orleans...I wish I had gone to see that beautiful city before this devastation.Mitchell has posted some thought-provoking (or just provoking--it might worry some of you to know he's in school for public policy ;-)) comments on our greatest natural disaster since the 1906 San Fran earthquake and fires.
And now, 950 dead from a stampede in Baghdad: Fear and fear alone has started to kill more people than bombs, it seems. Terrorism's harvest is growing; and remembered, as we mark the year anniversary of the school massacre at Breslan.
September continues to be a month of mourning. I will try to get less depressing posts up tomorrow; I know (I HOPE) you all read the news, and I don't mean to reiterate the bad news, but I can't think of much else at the moment.
